FlipStart Answers:
1a) FlipStart's authorized reseller, Dynamisim, may still have accessories
for sale. Please visit
Dynamisim to find out what accessories are still in stock.
2a) If the AC IN jack has stopped working or is intermittent then the best work
around is plugging in the port replicator to your FlipStart and using the AC IN
jack through the port replicator. If the FlipStart still does not charge

3a) The following list provides possible solutions to this problem:
-
Remove and
reattach the battery on the bottom of your FlipStart to ensure a good
connection
-
Make sure that
the AC power adapter is plugged into the power port on the REAR of the
FlipStart. Make sure that you have NOT mistakenly plugged the AC adapter plug
into the headphone jack on the right side of the FlipStart.

device is in range of the FlipStart. Some connection problems can be caused by
the Bluetooth devices being too far away from each other. Refer to your
device's user manual for recommended operating distances.
-
Verify that Windows is
configured to accept incoming Bluetooth connections (For more information, see
Windows Help.).
-
Verify that there are no
other Bluetooth devices in the area either trying to connect to the external
device or actively using it. If there are, wait until the other Bluetooth
devices have finished using the external device you want to use.
-
Verify that there are no
other devices in the area using the same radio frequency (2.4 GHz) as the
Bluetooth wireless devices. Some devices that might cause radio interference
include microwave ovens, Wi-Fi-enabled computers or access points, and some
cordless telephones. If you think this might be the problem, try moving your
FlipStart and external Bluetooth device out of the range of the potentially
interfering device.
-
Try removing the
connection to the external Bluetooth device from the FlipStart, and then
adding it again.
-
Double-click the
Bluetooth icon in the Windows system tray.
-
Select the device from
the list of external devices, and click Delete.

Click the
Disconnecting from Ethernet tab, and select Do nothing.
-
Click OK,
and close FlipStart Control Center.
27a) If you are experiencing a dim or blank main LCD screen when Windows
comes out of Standby or Hibernate mode, this could be the result of a known
issue with how the FlipStart's brightness controls interact with Windows. Try
the following procedure to work around the issue.
-
Before you put
your FlipStart into Standby or Hibernate mode, manually adjust the main screen
brightness one level higher than its current setting by pressing Fn+W
and then using the Jog Dial to make adjustments.
-
If manually
adjusting the brightness does not work the first time, try repeating the
procedure until you reach the maximum brightness level.
If following this
procedure resolves the problem, remember not to set the screen brightness level
lower than this before Windows goes into Hibernate or Standby mode.
28a) There are several ways to install programs onto your
FlipStart, depending on the program to be installed.
Installing from a local network
When you have successfully connected to your home or
office network, you can access other computers on your network to install
programs. There are two ways to do this:
-
Share a CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or
hard disk drive on a computer, and then access it with your FlipStart from the
network. Run the installation program from the shared drive, and choose the
installation location on your FlipStart's C: drive.
-
Copy the installation files
from another computer to your FlipStart over the network. Then, run the
installation from your FlipStart.
Installing downloaded files from the Internet
When you have successfully connected to the Internet, you
can download software installation files from Internet sites. Once an
installation file is on your FlipStart, you can run the installation program
from your FlipStart.
Installing from a removable storage device
Removable storage devices range from CD or DVD drives to
external hard drives to USB flash drives. If you have one of these storage
devices, you can install programs on your FlipStart simply by plugging the drive
into the FlipStart's USB port.
Installing programs directly from another computer
If you have an Ethernet crossover cable, you can connect
your FlipStart directly to another Windows-based computer to form a network. An
Ethernet crossover cable is a special type of network cable specifically used to
connect two computers to each other.
To connect your computers, plug one end of your crossover
cable into the Ethernet port of your desktop or laptop computer. Plug the other
end of the Ethernet cable into your FlipStart's Ethernet port, located on the
back of the port replicator. (For more information about using the port
replicator, click here.) Windows will recognize the new network and show a
'connected' icon in the lower part of your screen in the system tray.
Once your computers are connected, you can install
software from the network as described above in
Installing from a local network.

-
When prompted
Save Changes and Exit? (Y/N), press Y.
The system reboots automatically from the disk in the external floppy drive.
To return the
system to the factory default setting of booting from the internal hard drive,
see Resetting the FlipStart BIOS to the factory default settings.
Note:
You do not need to change any settings in the section labeled Floppy Drive
Types.
33a) You can use the Recovery DVD to restore your FlipStart's operating
system and software to its out-of-the-box state.
What you need:
-
External USB 2.0 DVD drive
-
FlipStart recovery DVD
(included in FlipStart package)
-
An available AC power outlet
Essential steps before you begin:
-
Back up any data you'd like
to keep from your FlipStart's internal hard drive. The recovery procedure will
totally erase your FlipStart's hard drive.
-
Remove the battery from the
bottom of the FlipStart, and write down the Microsoft Windows product
activation key from the sticker underneath the battery.
-
Make sure that the Flipstart
BIOS is set to boot from an external optical drive.
-
Make sure that the FlipStart
is plugged into an available AC power outlet.
Do not try this
procedure on a FlipStart running on battery power alone.
-
Make sure that the external
USB 2.0 DVD drive is plugged in to an available AC outlet, powered on, and
connected to the USB port on the rear of the FlipStart.
After you have completed the required pre-recovery steps, follow the
procedure below to reinstall Windows and FlipStart software to your FlipStart.
Warning! If you follow this procedure,
you will COMPLETELY ERASE the FlipStart's internal hard drive, including all
partitions on the drive. Before you start, be sure that you have backed up your
personal data to an external source, such as a USB flash drive or hard drive, a
USB DVD drive, or a shared network drive.
-
If you haven't already, turn
on the external DVD drive and plug it into an available USB port on the
FlipStart or on the FlipStart port replicator.
-
Insert the recovery DVD that
was included in the FlipStart package.
-
Connect your FlipStart to AC
Power.
Caution: The recovery
process can take a significant amount of time to complete based on the speed
of the connected DVD drive. Do not attempt the recovery process while the
FlipStart is functioning on battery power alone.
-
Restart or turn on the
FlipStart.
-
During the boot process
press any keyboard key when the message
Press any key to boot from CD or
DVD... appears on the screen. (This message will not appear if the
media is unreadable, if the media is not bootable, or if the boot process has
not been configured correctly in the BIOS.)
-
Once the system is booting
from the external drive, the recovery system will prepare the recovery
enviroment. (You will first see a progress bar while the system uncompresses
recovery environment files. You will then see a second progress bar similar to
the Windows Vista start up sequence.)
-
After the FlipStart Recovery
Console launches, it will verify that it has all the required files to perform
the recovery. (If you see an error message, there may have been an error
loading the recovery environment because of errors reading from the media. If
this occurs, try starting the recovery process from the beginning).
Note: The recovery
enivronment is unable to load the drivers for the mouse buttons located on the
top left side of the keyboard. To work around this issue, double-tap the
touchpad or use the keyboard (use
Tab to move between elements, and
Enter to select those
elements).
Warning! The recovery process will erase all
of the data contained on the hard drive. This includes all partitions
contained on the hard drive as well. Be sure you have backed up any data you'd
like to keep before proceeding to the next step.
-
Double-tap the touchpad to
click the Start button
to launch the recovery process.
-
When a warning prompt about
the recovery process appears, double-tap the touchpad to click the
Yes button to start the
recovery process.
-
Wait while recovery process
runs. The process takes a variable amount of time based on the speed of the
attached optical drive. When the process is complete, the FlipStart restarts
automatically.
-
Upon restart, the FlipStart
launches the Windows out-of-box installation and prompts you to enter the
Microsoft Windows product activation key. Use the activation key located on
the sticker underneath the FlipStart battery that you wrote down prior to
beginning this procedure.
Note: Do
not use the
Microsoft Office or Microsoft Outlook product activation key located on the
Microsoft Office or Microsoft Outlook disc case.
Once you have restored Microsoft Windows and the original FlipStart software,
be sure to check
our software download site for updated FlipStart software and drivers.
34a) This is a known issue with the FlipStart BIOS software. To update the

The system reboots automatically with the new date and time settings applied.
35a) Under certain circumstances, the sender information for an e-mail
message sometimes will not appear when you view the message in FlipStart
InfoPane or FlipStart Navigator. This issue occurs when Microsoft Office Outlook
has downloaded only an e-mail message's header information and not the body of
the message. Outlook will do this in the following circumstances:
-
You have a
low-quality or low-speed Internet connection.
-
The Internet
connection is interrupted while downloading new messages.
-
You have
configured Outlook to download only e-mail message headers.
To work around
this issue, either use a higher quality Internet connection or reconfigure
Outlook to download the full e-mail message rather than just the headers.
36a) Upgrading the internal hard disk on the FlipStart E-1001S is not offered

Issues addressed in FlipStart System Software Service Pack 2
The following known issues have been addressed in this Service Pack:
General
-
Occasionally, users would be
unable to log back into their profile once they had logged out.
Control Center
-
A variety of Control Center
settings would not persist after restarting the FlipStart, switching between
user profiles, or resuming from Standby mode.
-
(Windows Vista only) Waiting
several seconds before accepting a User Access Control prompt would cause an
error message.
-
Choosing "Prompt me to
choose/turn-off Wi-Fi Cellular" in Control Center's wireless connectivity
settings would sometimes have no effect and the user would never be prompted
to choose between the two wireless connectivity options.
-
Power settings made in
Control Center would sometimes not be made in Windows power settings.
-
If you had set
up user-defined default camera software to run every time the webcam is
switched on, the software would not start if the webcam was turned on in
Control Center.
-
Sometimes the Wi-Fi or
Cellular radios would immediately turn back on after turning off when
you connected via Ethernet.
FlipStart InfoPane
-
FlipStart InfoPane's meeting
alert audio signal would not play if the lid was closed.
FlipStart Navigator
-
While starting up, FlipStart
Navigator would sometimes display an error message, "Not Responding," and
would not redraw the screen correctly or respond to user input.
-
Navigator would remain on
the screen even after the Windows key was pressed and the Windows Start menu
was displayed.
-
(Windows Vista only) If you
pressed the Navigator key with the Windows Start menu open, Navigator would
not appear.
-
Navigator would sometimes be
slow to appear after you pressed the Navigator key.
-
Navigator would not display
the special folders in the Files section if you had not made and saved changes
to Navigator settings in Control Center.
40a) You can find all the latest updates and upgrades to FlipStart software
at download.flipstart.com.
41a)
Use FlipStart
Control Center to turn off wireless components when you don't use them
regularly. Disabling the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi radios, for example, helps to save
power and extend the FlipStart's battery life. (Press Fn+Q to quickly
switch off all wireless devices.)
-
Customize your
FlipStart's power management settings in Windows and in Control Center to best
fit your usage patterns.
-
Lower
the brightness level of the main screen (pressFn+W and then use the Jog
Dial or direction pad (D-pad) arrows to adjust the brightness).
-
Avoid processor-
or hard drive-intensive applications and tasks, such as video playback or
video editing.
-
Do not allow USB
devices to run unnecessarily when you are using battery power. Using some USB
devices while your FlipStart is running on battery power can greatly reduce
the amount of time the battery charge will last.
